Posted 2 months ago http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25802159/ Once a migrant worker, today he’s a brain surgeon. Abstract of text: So, on his 19th birthday, he clawed to the top of a 16-foot fence and jumped — illegally — to an uncertain future here in the U.S. “All I wanted to do was come in, make a little bit of money, send it back to my parents,” he says. I ask Quinones how he feels about illegal immigration today. Should we build walls? Should we keep illegal immigrants out of our schools? “Can we build walls?” he asks rhetorically. “Sure, we're gonna build walls. Can we make ’em taller? Sure, we can make ’em taller. Would that be a solution? As long as there's poverty, and as long as people are dying of hunger in other places, it's human nature. They will try to find better ways.” Is it right to laud someone who admits he illegally entered the US? Why do we have laws to protect our borders if the administration looks the other way? Please share your thoughts and comments. |

| Posted 2 months ago I think it's really simple; in theory, perhaps though not in the inplementation - set up a guest worker system. Find a way to allow our neighbors to the south to come and work legally! Think of how much money we'd save in enforcement, more taxes coming in, less identity theft, less crime,...and more dignity and less fear for the workers themselves. |

| Posted 2 months ago The Root Causes of Immigration ~ Kevin Boyle Illegal Immigration in the US: Causes ~ Wikipedia Will the US or Mexico's government make it feasable to LEGALLY come to the US? Will the economy and corruption in Mexico improve anytime in the next few decades? I seriously doubt it. Until these issues are remedied, I refuse to place any blame on those coming here to better themselves and/or the lives of them and their families OR the people who try to understand/accept them. Think about it, research the reasons they do it. What would you do if your family were living in a shack and starving w/ no options of improving you and your families livelihood and availability of the very basic necessities? We are lucky to be in this country (US) - flaws and all, too many of us take it for granted. Anyone blaming these types of people I've described above should be ashamed - we should blame our governments - the people who are abusing their power - plain and simple. We shouldn't have any problem with a valuable LIFE - such as the one mentioned int the article you've referenced in the original post - coming here to better him/herself, to improve his/her own cirmumstances - not to mention their own families' cirmcumstances. These kinds of people are strong, independent and courageous - they are the kind of people who persevere, despite circumstances we can't possibly fathom. I admire these type of illegal and legal immigrants. "People will forget what you say, they will forget what you do, but they will never forget how you made them feel!"-Unknown |

| Posted 2 months ago I don't know what else you'd expect Quinones to say. If he wasn't a natural born citizen, he was either sponsored a visa or came as an immigrant. Why is it wrong to admit having come as an immigrant? It would be weird and awkward of him to hide that fact and make something else up. You also may have missed the whole point of him talking about it. He came as an immigrant and not only worked hard to support his family ack home, but he actually bettered himself and achieved the American Dream. He came with nothing and is now a successful doctor. The whole point is that he was an illegal immigrant. Our government doesn't turn the other cheek, but immigration is quite necessary, so they only do so much to prevent it (building a fence for instance is a RIDICULOUS measure to take in my opinion). How else does anyone make it in to support a family in poverty somewhere else. We don't just grant visas to people who need them. They come in illegally, and they wait to obtain residency. They can still be deported when trying to obtain residency. We aren't turning our cheeks, there's just a line for when anyone's case will be heard for residency. If you make it in, you can eventually make your case to stay.
I think it's strange that you're so bothered by someone admitting that they came into this country illegally when this country is made up almost entirely of immigrants and immigrant descendants. |

| Posted 2 months ago The fact is that our country was built by the back breaking labor of our immigrant forefathers. My grandparents came here from Italy. When they came here, they needed a sponsor. They had to do things legally and they had to pay taxes. They did not get a free ride. Nothing was handed to them on a silver platter...or even a paper plate for that matter. Just like your forefathers, they worked hard and long and for very little. They stayed here and raised thier families. Their legally earned, taxed money was spendt here. They and others like them have built this country. It would be a grave injustice and a slap in the face to them to allow people to come here, and have everything handed to them, especially when the people here...whose generations of families have built this country, don't have the jobs or healthcare or education they need. I say take care of our own first. The governments of other countries who allow thier people to starve should be penalized by the U.N. for breaking some kind of humanitarian rules. They need to implement change in their own countries-( possibly with the help of the UN). We fought wars for our freedom when we had nothing to start with. We didn't do it easy and we did it legally. We(immigrants of many backgrounds) faced much difficulties and discriminations. It took us over 200 years to build our country to what it is today..which is a relatively short time considering that many countries are thousands of years old and still do not have people in them who strive to build them technically or elsewise. They figure they will come here...its way easier. Yes, we may have built this country with immigrants, but its not the 1800s or 1900s anymore..times have changed and in a post 911 era, we need to change with them. |

| Posted 2 months ago It amazes me to knowing that people think it's so simple for people from a country, such as Mexico, to come here legally. Whether they come legally OR illegally, it's still hard work!! When a family is starving w/ no hope in making it in your own country or coming to a better legally (bc of rediculous stipulations/requirements such as owning land/property/business and having large sums of money) ~ they'll do whatever it takes to get the basic necessities - as would we! If these people could've come legally, if it were feasable, most of them would. When they are here - those who are good "citizens" still live in fear of deportation - but it's a hell of alot better than where they came from in most cases. Again, it's government issues (not the individuals). "People will forget what you say, they will forget what you do, but they will never forget how you made them feel!"-Unknown |

| Posted 2 months ago There is a big distinction between illegally sneaking into a country and applying for a visa to become a legal immigrant. the term illegal means one broke the law. There are so many poor people in the US who never receive help from our government. The taxes we pay should be used for enriching the lives of its citizens, not those who come here illegally. The US already gives aid to many countries who need help. By allowing others to sneak into to the US, the governement has opened Pandora's Box and created resentment among its citizens. |

| Posted 2 months ago As long as they are behaving themselves, I honestly could care less if they are breaking the law by illegally immigrating. Fact is, there may be losses when it comes to immigrants, but there are many gains as well. | Posted 2 months ago Do you care if your kid's clasrooms are overcrowded? How many ERs are overburdened closed due to deficits creating by non paying illegal immigrants? The impact is enormous. If one chooses to immigrate, there is a legal way. Believe me, other countries would put you or I in jail if we entered illegally. |

| Posted 2 months ago The vast majority of over-crowding in emergency rooms is due to legal citizens of this country who wait until they are desperately ill to seek medical care or use the ER as those of us who are more fortunate would use a doctor's office because the do not have and cannot afford insurance or health care. That's a whole separate issue. There have always been illegal immigrants. People who live in the southwestern US may be more troubled by this than people in some other geographic areas because they are more exposed to the resultant problems. But, it seems to me that this has become a hot button issue post 9/11. Mexicans did not blow up the World Trade Center. I am most definitely NOT accusing anyone of racism, but I do wonder if we would be so animated about it if the illegals where white and spoke English. It's a complex issue. Legal or not, these are desperate human beings and a little compassion would be a good thing. | Posted 2 months ago I don't look down on illegal immigrants for "providing basic necessities to them and their families" I look down on them because they live off of our system, tax free. They put their kids through our schools free, take aide from our hospitals when they need it and stiff them on the bills- no help to health care costs for our country. I look down on them because they do not do their part for our country...I don't see them fighting in Iraq to protect our freedoms, which they say they want so bad. I don't see them applying for citizenship so they can be a part of our country and communities. They simply want a free ride. There are 12 million illegal immigrants in this country draining our system. BTW...anyone know where i can get some affordable health insurance? I have none at this time and am struggling in my business.Because I am running a business...whch brings in less money any illegal makes here...even at minimum wage, I am ineligible for any state benefits. Maybe I should go to another country and live off of their system...oh yeah..they have no system! FIX YOUR SYSTEMS SO I CAN HAVE A PLACE TO MAKE MONEY AND NOT PAY TAXES! AND GET FREE HEALTH CARE ...OH I NEED AN EDUCATION TOO! And I am considered middle class! There are AMERICAN CITIZENS that have it way worse than me. I'd rather see my taxes and the efforts of my forefathers who helped build this country and have died protecting it, go toward AMERICAN CITIZENS who need the help first! Maybe someone should run an add campaign showing the AMERICAN homeless and the AMERICAN starving and the AMERICAN underpriveleged. I "don't look down on illegals for taking care of them and thier families" I look down on those who think the illegals deserve anything of ours, that we have worked and died for, before our own underpriveleged people. |

Katie, I do not disagree that there has been illegal immigration in the past, but the surge in the last two decades has been huge. The statistics I quoted were from an article in my hometown in New England. The hospital lost billions of dollars in 2006 and 2007, and they do track the visits according to residential status. There were two smaller hospitals, which closed for this precise reason. Our high school, which was renovated two years ago, is bursting at the seams. With a population of over 3000 students, it is the largest one in CT. Some academic classes have more than 40 kids, and that translates into more desks, books, and materials, which require more taxes. Many friends who had jobs as landscapers or carpenters lost their jobs to illegal workers who would work for less. The city added three more housing inspectors to stem the tide of house fires because illegal immigrants were living 10+ per house and used space heaters all day, which caused the fires. Most worked outdoors and in the winter, they used local services paid for by the taxpayers. This places a huge burden on the community.
Legal immigrants built our community. They came to the US legally. Residents enjoy the cultural diversity, and we had many friends who were born abroad and in South America. My DIL was born in Mexico and immigrated to the US legally. I do not judge people because of race or religion; however, as a teacher I saw first hand the demise of our public school. The needs outweighed the dollars available to fund programs.
My opinion remains that the only way to enter a foreign country is legally. Currently there are over 12 million illegal people living in the US.
I have a good friend who has a PhD in education. Her husband’s company transferred her husband to Europe for three years. My friend was not allowed to work because unemployment in France was high at the time. She had no choice but to abide by the laws of the country. There is no reason that we should allow anyone to break American laws, either. If they enter illegally, they should be sent home.

| Posted 2 months ago I understand your frustrations with Illegal Immigration, but this problem won't be solved until governments take wiser actions. The governments of US and Mexico have fostered the many problems that exist in the Immigration system. They are a major influence in Illegal Immigration. Yes, some come here Legally. But those are exceptions. Ask an illegal immigrant why they came here Illegally rather than Legally. In many cases, they aren't the ones to blame for the circumstances they're in and the choices they made to come illegally. In many cases they HAVE NO CHOICE. | Posted 2 months ago Dana, everyone has a choice. If I rob a bank because I am hungry, the consequence is that I will land in jail for breaking the law. The judge will not care that I committed a crime to feed my kids. I will still do the time. Then, is it okay to for illegal immigrants to break the law for the same reason? No, it is not. Both the bank robber and the illegal immigrant broke the law. By making exceptions to the law for some people because of humane reasons weakens the very tenet and strength of the law. The Mexican government is purported to be corrupt, but the American government is more adept about whitewashing its scandals. As citizens, we know there is so much that goes on behind closed doors. All governments are corrupt to some degree. Whenever you have a group of the elite running the country, the chances for a true democratic process lessens. Although we can vote and have rights, American citizens do not have carte blanche to exercise their free will. For the supposed good of the people, government will always exercise its right to control the masses. Otherwise, there would be anarchy. Why does our government turn a blind eye on illegal immigration? Illegal immigration is such a hotbed for discussion because there are two sides to the coin. There is the humane side and the legal side. The generosity of our government toward people from other countries is unmatched. Rarely is there reciprocity. As citizens, if we break the laws, we are punished. However, illegal immigrants are allowed to stay here without redress from the government while they break our laws. There is an inequity in this belief. Congress has not addressed the concerns of our citizens. The debate will continue until someone in Congress drafts a comprehensive plan to assuage those fears. I do not feel comfortable allowing any foreigner with a fake ID, whatever his motive, to jump the fence and live free without consequence. 9-11 is too fresh in my memory to allow this breach in security. The US is a great country. It is a privilege to live here, not a right for all who choose.

| Posted 2 months ago Here is the real question. Is he legal now? Is he paying into the system? Is he contributing to hs community? The fact remains that our border will continue to be crossed as long as there are COMPANIES and INDIVIDALLY owned businesses and households willing to break the law. Go after them first then work on a guest worker program. The fact still remains that these people are doing the jobs that WE refuse to do, at wages we would never accpet. Who's to blame here? |

| Posted 2 months ago Wow, did this topic get hairy or what. Ok people, if we are woriied about our homeless and poor then look to the corporations that are deliberately shifting money to other countries to avoid taxes ( that could help mllions). Look to our own government that gives tax cuts to the most rich! I don't care who you are you don't need two houses, five cars and designer purses that cost hundred to thousands of dollars when did we lose our humanity? We can no longer view our selves as individual countries it's time to think globally people! Sometmes people need help a little somethng to get them going. Remember, If the mexican economy were to get more competitive with us prices would be more competitive, because corporations wouln't hold monolopies on industry. While,we as americans have it pretty darn good, we are also ridiculous in our obsession with material things. Next time you are spending hundreds of dollars for Christmas think about having a simpiler Christmas, enjoy family instead of gifts and donate the money would have spent to help a family actually have food and shelter for the holidays. It's time to stop thinking of ourselves and how things affect us and worry more about our local and global comminities. |

| Posted 2 months ago People will always try to justify their breaking the law, they will always ASS-U-ME it was meant for the 'other guy' and not meant to apply to them. | Posted 2 months ago The Global economy: One reason why manufacturers changed to production in China is that the cost of doing business in Mexico increased too much. You get what you pay for: Tainted prescriptions, toxic paint on toys, and dog food infested with salmonella. The best example I can use is the former Huffy Bicycle Company. Huffy was an American company that employed American workers, but it was bought out by a foreign concern. Production shifted to China, and American workers lost their jobs, healthcare and security. Manufacturing is all but gone in the US. Tech products are designed here but made in Asia and Russia, more lost American jobs. Nothing is manufactured in total in the US today. DH worked for an established company, which disappeared during the Christmas break. This was the fourth plant where he worked that closed in five years. (Yes, he has gone back to school, twice for a new career.) The owner sold the business abroad, skipped town, and left hundreds of workers unemployed and uninsured. This has happened repeatedly in the US. to the steelworkers, auto and factory workers, IT jobs are shipped overseas; our credit, medical and financial information is coded overseas. Banks and real estate are owned by foreign concerns. The image of every American who owns an SUV and shops to excess is a media fabrication. The rumor sells magazines and ad space on TV. Most people I know are squeaking by on less real income than 1999. That is correct. With inflation, our income is equivalent to a salary in 1999. It is not materialistic Americans as we have been labeled, but US women and US men who are trying to support their families who are hurt by the global economy. America is being sold off piece by piece. If the last few years are an indication of what is to come, economically, we are all in trouble. It is a myth if you become ill or disabled in America, you will be covered. Medicaid recipients die before they get to use their medical benefits. Oh, well, the attitude is, "It is better for the bottom line!" I listened to a conference of world economists on C-Span who fear that the US is headed for a decade-long recession financially worse than Japan suffered in this century. So yes, I bristle when my taxes pay for freeloaders and bailing out fraudulent bankers when 50% of my taxed pension is spent on medical premiums and co pays. Now we are living on 22% of the income we earned in 2003, and the cost of living has spiraled upward. I have a mortgage thanks to the weak housing market, a car payment due to a serious accident, and DH's initial job offer fell through. To date, 200 applications in 3 months later, he cannot get a job because he is over 60. He does not care if he sweeps floors, he just wants to work, but there are no jobs. Two interviewers this week told him that the companies are not sure if they will hire a new employee because of the economy. Why are they putting ads in the paper then? We are full of false security that the economy will improve, and every day the picture is gloomier. I want to protect whatever little I have left so I can afford to eat and heat my house in the winter. I do not want my taxes paying for someone who does not belong here legally so he can send the money to his own country. We are in survival mode now, and greed or fancy gadgets were never the name of the game for us. I am sorry if I sound doomerish, but I have saved money since I had my first job at the age of 12. It is very disheartening to know that next year we could be living in the street. Sadly my story is not mine alone, but it one shared by many Americans who want to make it to tomorrow. If I could climb a fence, Mexico would not let me enter illegally. They would bill the US government for my return, plane fare home. Before the US helps those who enter illegally, the government should worry about the taxpaying citizens who have lost jobs to other countries.

Robbing a bank and coming to a place like America to WORK for a better life are hardly comparable when it comes to breaking the law. IMO, as another poster said, we DO need to think GLOBALLY. We cry for the children/people of other nations. We help them, donate to them ~ as long as they're stuck in those circumstances. But God forbid they do whatever they can to provide for themselves and their families. As that same poster also said, we are a nation full of materialism. IMO, we have no right to complain about people coming here for basic necesities that are IMPOSSIBLE for them otherwise. Have you asked your DIL what she thinks the reasons are for Mexicans coming illegally - how it was that she was able to get here legally?? Does she understand their circumstances? I feel that we must pull from perspectives other than our own. If you were facing your mom, your siblings, your children and yourself starving day-to-day (not to mention watching entire neighborhoods all around you going through the same thing) living in a one-bedroom shack - living on a few dollars A DAY w/ no opportunities for improvement where you're at - when the government has made it impossible for you to come here and pay for coming here legally - you will do something like come to America for "a better life". We have the expression "American Dream", that's what they see/hear non-stop. And when they realize that they have no way of getting it legally in time to save themselves and their loved ones - they are willing to make that dangerous trip here. As I've said before, I understand that there are some valid negative issues that have arisen as a result of illegal immigration. But, the types of individuals I'm describing are not to blame. Yes there are criminals in the mix, just as there are in ours and any other. But many of these people simply come here to work, and work hard for themselves and their loved ones. We have no right to place blame on them. Be angry with our government and theirs - be angry with the corruption and the problems they cause - but not these individuals who are simply doing what is necessary to take care of their own - making a dangerous trip here. Some of those same types of people DIE before they even arrive. It's not a simple decision they make to break the immigration law. | Posted 2 months ago This most especially pisses off my husband. He worked HARD to get his visa to come here; he himself is from a third world country (think Mexico is 'poor' go to Nepal!) and he has had people come up to his place of work and DEMAND that they get a job there and that he 'owes it to them' because they had a 'hard life' the NERVE! My husband grew up with cast off clothing, dirt floors, undrinkable water (he told me you had to boil it twice before it was acceptable), strife everywhere where whole families were dragged out of their houses in the middle of the night and dissappeared! Schools with inadequate teaching tools, and get this, you had to PAY to go to school! Not just college, grade school, middle school and highschool all had fees you had to meet because they do not want to waste their time teaching those who do not want to learn. The fact that he had a better education than I did living on a border town is discusting! He was doing calculus in middle school ladies, in my HIGHSCHOOL we were bearly learning Algebra because the teacher had to teach in both english AND spanish which took alot of time AWAY from us who knew english, knew how to READ (yes read many in my highschool had no clue how to do this and thought we 'owed them' that time the teacher took to help them). We had daycare in my highschool and they were thinking about putting one in the middle school because like everything else we 'owed it to them' now I am thuroughly sick of paying taxes that go to welfare because I have seen where it goes! I have seen the girls show up 5 filthy, unkempt and not properly clothed kids in tow and themselves wearing Gucci and Baby Phat hair done jewels in the fake nails and picking up their monthly checks because the WIC dept was in the same building as you got your drivers license or paid a fine for your tickets! Bottom line, if you are coming into the country do it properly, I do not 'owe it to you' nor should I have to pay what little money thatI have that should go to MY kids and MY family to take care of YOURS knowing full well they are 'just a monthly check'. Some women DO need that help some women DO use the system correctly but far more are abusing it. Food stamps are not to pay for you cigarettes, lotto tickets or your alcohol those are LUXURIES so quit trying to use them the WRONG WAY! "The brick walls are not there to keep us out. Oh yes, I realize there are plenty bad areas in the USA - probably just as bad as in many other countries. I know the scenery. The difference is: 1. it's not as widespread, and 2. we have a system (not a perfect one, but at least WE HAVE ONE) for people in those circumstances. FYI: We do take care of our own first, that's why we have unemployment/job placement, health, financial aid, etc. They don't have the opportunities we have - for work and pay alone. They come here and take jobs that are less popular - for less pay - but it's still more than they'd ever make where they came from. Most of them aren't coming here to take away from us, they are simply here to take care of the basics. We can be mad at them all we want, but it won't make a difference, they will still come bc of what they are living in. There will continue to be some negative consequences as long as our governments (US/Mexico) aren't taking actions to improve the system! And I guarantee you, if all the other nations were as close to us, we'd have the same problem, only worse. The governments (US/Mexico) have allowed the negative impact by not implementing a system THAT WORKS. | Posted 2 months ago In Ohio, 93,000 people who are on Medicaid are still waiting for medical intervention. It has been three years for some of them. Sadly, many have died and some committed suicide to end their pain. One 16-year-old boy who has Cerebral Palsy has no wheel chair; it broke, and the last time bathing equipment was authorized was when he was 8 years old. His Dad carries his son on his back because he has severe CP. The son cannot walk or talk. The family went broke trying to provide for the needs of their son. There is a current, ongoing suit against the government who denied medical claims for workers in a nuclear plant. They have cancer from the radioactivity materials. In 2000, they were promised a settlement; sadly, they are still waiting although the numbers dwindled due to death. I read a study this week that said that death due to disease is more common among Medicaid recipients because there is a lack of early intervention because Medicaid denied their claims. Long-term medical problems are the number one reason for bankruptcy in the US. The favorite words for health insurers are “your claim is denied". There is massive poverty in the South, especially areas near New Orleans, in Appalachia, in various cities where workers mined coal or built steel, Detroit is full of unemployed autoworkers due to job loss; SF, Boston, and NYC have thousands of homeless people living in the streets. Even educated people with advanced college degrees have been downsized or outsourced. All of these citizens still need a place to live and a way to feed their families. The government looks the other way while philanthropic resources try to fill the gap. We have our plate full of American citizens who need help and do not receive it. Most shelters and food banks are local efforts funded by a charity, church, or local benefactors. In the US, there are people living in subways, alleys, cardboard boxes for homes, railcars, and in tent cities. The mantra in the US should be do not become old, sick or disabled. Every US citizen should be able to live his/her life with dignity. Our system is broken. We spend trillions of dollars in Iraq and give financial aid, support, and food supplies to numerous countries throughout the world yet we deny aid to our own. Just because there is a system to help the disadvantaged in the US does not mean that it is successful. I worked with a teacher who had four children, one of whom had severe seizures. His wife could not work since she was the primary caretaker for his daughter. His family qualifi |
