How do you feel about a lesbian coach/teacher vs a male coach/teacher?

Posted 2 months ago My fiance' and I were talking about this a couple of nights ago and I wonder how you feel about this, where do you side? Would you prefer that your daughter's Phys.Ed teacher were a straight man or a lesbian woman? What is the differnece between the two in a world that sees and experiences so much sexual abuse at the hands of our kids' educators? Same goes for our boys; Would you rather that his Phys. Ed teacher were a gay man or a straight woman? I use a Phys. Ed teacher as the example because of how our children are more seemingly approachable in that arena. You know, shorts, showers, etc... Unless the teacher has publicly proclaimed his/her sexual orientation, how would you determine if he/she was a homosexual or a lesbian? Two of my kids most dedicated teachers were gay. Because someone is gay does not mean that he/she is a child predator. The two are not analogous.
I am more concerned with people of either sex who prey on kids. Predators can be doctors, lawyers, celebrities, businesspersons, teachers, clergy or your neighbor. Sometimes you really do not know much about any of them.
Thorough background checks are the best defense against predators. Keep your kids out of harm's way by teaching them how to stay safe. Stay abreast of where your kids are and whom they befriend. Being a concerned parent is important, but prejudging others because they are gay is discriminatory.

| Posted 2 months ago Granted--stgreg11 is correct in stating that being gay is not equivalent to being a pedophile. That being said, I pondered KatS' question and my answer in both cases was that, if I had to choose between the options stated, I would rather my Kid's PE teacher be a woman--lesbian woman for a female child and straight woman for a male child. I will say, too, that I'd prefer my son have a straight man as a PE teacher just because I think a straight man would be more effective as a PE teacher to boys. I think the reason I choose a woman is that , in general, men are simply more sexual beings than women. So in looking at a situations where the potential for an unwanted sexual advance is increased, I'd rather have my child be with a woman--because, in general, women are less apt to impose unwanted sexual advances on other people. I'd like to point out that I think the media places unwarranted emphasis on pedophiles for the same reason that any news organization focuses attention on things that are really not newsworthy. As they say in the news business, "If it bleeds, it leads." I'm not denying the abuse that pedophilia inflicts on children. But, I don't really think that there are more or fewer pedophiles, relative to the total population, than there has ever been. Do we have any social scientists out there who can speak out of knowledge?

| Posted 2 months ago It really wouldn't matter to me either way. The way things are now, I think we have to be aware of all teachers, whatever the combination. Many teachers abuse their positions these days, and you never can be too wary. |

| Posted 2 months ago I'd rather not know the orientation. I'd be fine, either way, as long as he/she is a good PE teacher. But, if I had to choose, I'd go with Maddie's answer. For the same reasons, and it just seems that women are less likely to be pedophiles. I don't know if this is true or not, but this it what it seems like as a result of media coverage. | Posted 2 months ago I honestly don't care what their sexual orientation. Just because a person is homosexual doesn't mean they are any more likely to approach our children in an indecent manner. I have a few homosexual friends, male and female, and I am not worried that my lesbian friends are going to hit on me all the time just like I am not worried that my straight male friends are going to hit on me all the time. |

| Posted 2 months ago I agree with Red, I have many gay friends and lesbian friends and if they are TEACHING a child something then I really could care less their sexual orientation is It does not make them a bad teacher or a superior teacher. The whole keeping gay men out of the boyscouts thing has always blown my mind. Last I checked, my gay friends liked MEN not BOYS! and my lesbian friends like WOMEN not GIRLS! I agree with someone else saying just because they are gay does not make them a pedophile. But you are correct KatS some people WILL NOT let their child be taught by such individuals for some DUMB reason they always have this notion their poor precious dear will 'catch it' or some odd thing. Same goes for Myspace, many colleges were getting emails from parents asking for their kids to have other roomates and the colleges did the right thing, they DENIED those requests as the SHOULD! Your kid is going to go out into the world soon, you cant shield them from everything and sometime you are just going to have to respect their choice and who they pick as friends and as mates. | Posted 2 months ago Since I assume that the straight teachers are not sharing their sex lives with their students then I'm assuming gay or lesbian teachers would act the same. So I honestly don't take it as an issue. As far as Gym and going in the locker rooms? In today's age the teachers don't go in the locker rooms like they used to, they still go in but most of the time it's after the children are dressed. At least that's how it is at my daughters school. Heck maybe her teacher is a lesbian and is protecting herself? HMM never thought about it and now that I have? Still not worried. |

| Posted 2 months ago Point of information: studies interviewing convicted (and admitted) sex offenders (both of children and adults) overwhelmingly identify as: middle-aged, white, straight men with available consentual sexual partner(s). Sex offenders may have a preference (ie: age, gender, etc) but mostly victimology is about availablilty. Anecdotally, when I would shadow therapy groups on the sex offender unit of a prison (they had to admitt their crimes to get onto the unit- no chance for appeal or not guilty plea once they applied for this unit) the most homophobic "manly" men in the group had molested boys. Back to sexual preference of a teacher- so long as he or she does a good job: builds children up, sets appropriate boundries and limits, and effectively communicates with students, administration and parents, I don't care how that person identifies. We have to educate our children to be safe- but mostly it is OUR job to keep them safe. We need to let children know that it is okay to talk to safe adults about when they feel uncomfortable with a person or situation- that we won't be embarrassed by the topic (I won't get onto my soap box on using proper names for body parts here). Also- if a child does not want to be hugged or kissed by a person, we should support that. If they do not feel comfortable being touched in that simple way (a sloppy wet kiss from an over the top aunt for example) and we don't stand up for them, why would a child think that we would believe or back them up if someone is touching them in the most uncomfortable and abusive way?
