Hey Strangers here in Women Co.

I recently took a Carreer assesment test, and it turns out I would make a pretty awesome Nature Photographer...okay....Not too bad, I guess, since I am soon getting my permit and could carry my equipment in the trunk... I am already doing research on different types of equipment I would need for Nature Photography too. It's kinda fun...

But here's the problem: I might have about $150.00 to my name right now, unemployed, and really have no support group so I won't give up on yet another idea on how to get on my feet.

May I please ask for advice and maybe some help with my situation? I am not asking anyone for a money loan or outright pity because I *lol* probably sound whimpery and pathetic right now...: )   I am just so scared I won't be able to get on my feet and start a real life where I don't feel like a lazy bum! I really don't like feeling useless, let alone that I will never break free from my family's ideas of who I am and how I will turn out to be.

Help? Please and Thank you, with a cherry on top?

Sounds like you need to find a way to earn some money to live on while you're getting your photography business going.  Are there any photography studios around that may need help?   Check with the businesses you visit on a regular basis to see if they need any help, you'd be surpised how ofter businesses don't advertise that they're looking.

We have two privately owned coffee shops in town that sell local artists pictures and paintings.  They must sell rather well because the pictures are replaced quite often.  I have noticed the the scenic ones go faster than the ones with people in them.   It would be a way to get your name out there and two bring in some money.

As a photographer, you should have a Flickr account. Also SmugMug is perfect for you -- people can buy your prints online and the site takes care of printing them out and shipping!

However, on the side, you should definitely get a job. Ideally, it'll be in your field of passion, but it sounds like you're in dire straits. Check in with temp agencies in your area to start!

I think the ideas posted above are terrific.  And a job is required, unless you can live on unemployment benefits.

If you need to depend on your family at this time, if it's at all possible, I 'd recommend doing that temporarily.  I know it's hard for an adult to live with her family but it's better than sleeping in a bus terminal.

Also, the name you've chosen concerns me.  I'm probably being a "crystal-gazing, incense-burning, overreactionary."  I wish you felt a different sense of identity aside from "NeedWork."  Think about the positive.  There is something to be said for counting our blessings and focussing on the positive instead of the negative.

Often, the state where you live has Work Force Training program that pay for your tuition while you get more skills, i.e. in photography and they will extend the unemployment benefit while at school. This could be a seminar that may benefit you in the field that you are interested at. Best wishes

Start visiting locally ran restaurants and find out if they put art from local artists up - you will be surprised how many do.

I landed a job part time at a local restraunt, it's a 20 min. walk actually. :)  Happy about that... I have friends at the local library, and they helped me grab up some good books on photography (digital camera), and Small Business manuals, one of them has all the forms I would need, too!! AWESOME!!!

Thanks a bunch, I am almost "on my feet" thanks to the advice you have givin me.

Hey, pass the word around that this Topic thread can be used for other's "Flat Broke and Awesome Career ideas" promlems, too.

I spent £70 on a really awesome digital camera (roughly $140), and I carry it with me always.  I have a friend who does really great photography with a digital, and I'm enjoying learning how to do it, too.  What kind of equipment do you have?

wow, I did not know 70 euro was $140...thanks! (Europe fan!!)

My equipment? uhh...just an old fashioned camera. Not digital, and you have to turn a dial in order for the film to go to the next space on the strip.  I don't even know what brand it is, the name was rubbed off years ago.

My mom bought me a scanner/printer so I could load my pictures onto the web.  :)

That's 70 pounds.  I think Euros would be alot closer to the dollar amount.  70 pounds would be roughly between 80 to 85 euros.  Just FYI.  If you really want to have some fun, convert into Swedish crowns!  I had a shock then, because I converted 385 euros into about 4500 Swedish crowns and thought I was rich!  I learned to convert the amounts in my head quite quickly, because the amount in crowns is roughly 13 times the amount in pounds, so if something costed 160 crowns, I didn't go into shock anymore.  It's an interesting thing, currency conversion.  I currently have two or three different kinds of money in the house....not great amounts, mind you, but 40 crowns is enough to buy a cup of coffee, anyway.  Back to the cameras, though.....I used to take pictures and scan them onto my website the way you're describing.  The awesome thing about digitals, should you ever be able to get one, is that you download the pictures from your camera directly to the computer as a raw file, and if you set your camera on its highest resolution, the picture is crammed with information.  The higher the pixels, the better, to a point.  I have 8 pixels, and if you look at my pics in my albums, you can see that it's adequate, but I would've loved to have the Pentax with 10 pixels!  Just couldn't afford it at the time.  But after you get the pictures onto your computer, you can crop, zoom, whatever you want to do, and the put the finished product on your site with a simple upload.  Voila.  I'm absolutely loving it.  You can also save the pictures onto a disc and take them to the photo centre at your Wal-Mart (our Asda), where you can have them made into prints, you can order albums from photo shop, or you can use them yourself to make cards and prints that you can sell on etsy.  My friend makes his into prints that you can frame, and they're gorgeous.  All from a simple digital.  Maybe you could sell some of your prints on etsy, and make a little money to get something going for yourself.  I wish you the best, and would love to hear more.  Are you in the group Have camera, will travel?  You can meet alot of great photographers there.

Say I had maybe $200.-- , would you please tell me what that would be in my pocket if I were in England? I have gone to many web sites...they want money in order to tell me how much money I would have! *grumble*... What is the employment like?....

uhh...crud...are you even in England? Because I really feel like a dork, asking you questions about England when you might not be there....

I don't mind my ancient camera, it's small and takes great photos.

Need,  Remember that foreign currencies value, relative to other currencies, fluctuates based on global economics.   To ask "How much is US$200 in British Pound Sterling?" is not really a fair question because of the constant change.  Here is a website which you can use to get this free information, both immediate and historical.   www.xe.com

Now, to the subject at hand:  My observation is that you are easily distracted from your initial question about advancing a photographic career.   I'm concerned that your ultimate success may be jeopardized if you allow yourself consistently to wander off track.

Perhaps this is my left-brain thinking furrowing its brow at your right-brain thinking and my left-brain should just relax.  And that is what I will do but I feel compelled to point this out to you.

Seabrownthree has given you some very current information about the current scene in photographic equipment and you've indicated that you're happy with your Mom's antique hand-me-down.  I'm not saying that your equipment is useless.  I'm not a photographer and I'm sure that some very stylized, marketable photos can be obtained--with a Brownie. for that matter.

I am, however, concerned that pearls of wisdom are being offered to you and you're not recognizing, acting upon, or even acknowledging the valuable advice you're getting from some very savvy women.

Your first message clearly evoked a lot of empathy from many members.  I think when people get feedback that their suggestions are being acknowledged, they are more inclined to continue making them.  How about a little feedback from you on the numerous websites that members have told you to check into?  What steps have you taken to followed up on them and offer some of your photos for sale?

Thank you Maddie. I am sorry if I was rude by not giving responses for the advise. I have listened and put to use what I can right at this point in time. I have been trying my best to do reaserch, trying to find a mentor or a Museum to get hints from, and selling off my stuff at the same time inorder to get the new and funky Cameras I have been looking into, along with camera stands of all sorts. I have been looking at the photos posted here on the site, trying to figure out angles, height, distance, zooms, all that stuff that was put into use to make thoes photos turn out the way they did. I did check out (I am pretty sure) all of the offered website links right after I had recieved them. I plan to check them all out again, try to see if something I have done since then could work into using the websites.

I have found an Antique Shop, a Quilting Shop, and some other places including the Hallmark Store, I have been trying to make time to go and ask questions. I have the business' cards, I just have to set up the appintments and correct and proper question sheets, along with more spare paper for extra questions, answeres, or helpful tips the folks might want to give me. I am going to get another camera here soon. I have enough money right now to get this awesome digital camera from this magizine mom gets, it's called FingerHut. It's better than Rent-to-Own!

Mom helped me get a printer! I picked it out, she paid for it, all I had to do was pay her back when I could! It's a Kodak, and so beautiful! Walmart had it for sale at only $50.00!!! Sweetness!!! I am still so happy I have my printer! It even came with a CD-ROM called Print Artist, and oh man is it helpful! Luckily for me, I'm a tech junkie, and I love thrift stores!

Oh! That job I was so pshyched about? Two days and they told me to get lost. Something about not going fast enough. Hello! Second day, still learning!!!

Back to the photography! aarg! Maddie! You aren't supposed to be so right about me getting so easily distracted! LOL  :)

I was thinking that since I am just begining, I shouldn't aim too high. Baby Steps, you know? I had thought to just stock up on picture paper, different types and styles of picture frames w/ glass & stand, and a variety of decorative paper. I'd have the frame(1) the backround paper(2) to match the Photo I took(3). I figured that is the best way to go for right now since I can find alot of what I would need right at the local thrift or Dollar store.

In regards to:

1: the wonderful ideas to check out any local restraunts or low costumer businesses- I am still doing just that whenever I go for my outdoor time. Even when I am making a bee line for the library- I still stop and check some stores out. Thanks for that tip!

2: The workforce idea- There is a local work force program here. It's called Grundy County Workforce. I am trying to find out the open hours to go make an appointment. Thanks!

3: Flickr & SmugMug- I did check thoes sites out, and plan to do so again. Did you know that Photobucket has some very nice simularities to both sites? I have an account with Photobucket, and will check into the other sites soon. Thanks!

4: Come to think of it, I didn't check out Blogger.com. I must have dissmissed it on default since I have a blog thingie going on on my Myspace page. Not the same thing most likley, and I appologize for dissmissing it without even looking into it. You know what you are talking about, I need to learn. Thanks!

5: Senderofcards, bless you! I go to the Library almost as often as my own bedroom! I have been talking up a storm with business owners in downtown Morris about the history of the town, get them talking, you know? I would (have been) bring up the topic idea of taking photos of their buildings for the history if nothing else, see weither I get a Yea or Nay. It's been a Nay for every attempt. But I promise not to give up! Thanks!

whew!!! It's midnight Ladies. I need to be up at 8ish AM.

Before I go, though, I need to send out the shout that I have an Amazon.com Seller's account. I go under the Username of "GotStuff2Sell". I have a small selection of books at fair prices up right now, and I plan to be adding to it ASAP.          And, yes. I am begging for your help. But please don't feel bullied by that! I don't mean to at all.

G'NIght Ladies.

Thank you again, Maddie.Keep me inline, would ya? My mom hadn't gotten me to focus so fast on the main topic for a long time.

Hi Ya!

Can SO relate...am not only flat broke, but in a state I've only been in for a year!  Have you beat in the cash department tho..have $200.  But does that count if my rent's not paid for this month?!?!

It's very discouraging to have a liftime of experience, and have no idea of where or how to look for a place to apply it!  I read my resume to myself when I get discouraged...my God, I am awesome!, and I have done wonderful things at the jobs I've worked in over the years.   Then the question arises of how to let others know about the wonderfulness of me and all the great things I could do for them.

One of the hardest things is not having someone to bounce this off of.  I lived my life in Denver, CO, and have no friends out here at all.  My Grandbabie;s great looks and tears are the only thing that got me out here!  I do have my daughter, but she's a corporate and computer programing whiz with her own business, and has little paitence for her "hippie" Mom.

Take heart!  Revel in the "wonderfulness" of you, even if you do it by yourself in the wee hours.  It will give you the push to keep on, well, you know the cliche.

Good Luck!

Pam
