Men and Football: Please explain

Posted 9 months ago I like sports, I really do. I even sometimes enjoy football. But the idea of holing myself up at least one day a week, glued to the TV, with MINIMAL INTERRUPTIONS or contact with loved ones is just perverse and unhealthy. I don't understand the overwhelming appeal, yet almost all men I know have a terminal case of football-itis. I don't even understand the fanatical loyalty to specific teams. From what I can tell, the personnel change every year, so saying "I am a Steelers fan" (or whatever) is basically pledging allegiance to a logo, not some ongoing, consistent group. Someone explain this to me. Is it genetic? Is there a cure? |

| Posted 9 months ago I don't know if it's genetic but I know that it's always something. If it's not football then its soccer or golf....i say let them watch their football and use that time for yourself! Go get a pedicure or hang out with friends |

| Posted 9 months ago I can understand not wanting to be bothered when you are watching TV. What I don't understand is how some men will watch ANY and EVERY game on TV, regardless of whether they like the team or not. Whats up with that? |

| Posted 9 months ago It's socialization. No matter how much I enjoy sports, I would much rather do something creative or active than spend my weekends in front of a TV. |

| Posted 2 months ago I LOVE football! Go Cowboys!!!! I have never enjoyed football the way I enjoy it now though. My fiance' is a Vikings fan. Hee Hee and I'm a Cowboys fan and anytime either of our teams play we settle in with some snacks, drinks and get our game fix. It's time wonderfully spent together doing something we both enjoy. I can't wait for the season to start already. I'm with you MissKitty, what is up with watching ALL the games if you aren't a fan of the team that is playing? Need Breeds Ingenuity! |

| Posted 2 months ago If this forum is "ask a man" then why are all woman posting?(Please forgive me Distant Wizard - I did not notice you there!!!) -Here is my take - in highschool I played the trumpet and went to football games - during the games I learned a little about how it is played. So I appreciate a play or two when executed well and brings the element of surprize- expecially when something happens that was not supposed to!! However, I do not appreciate football to the extent that I appreciate a really slamm'in trumpet in a jazz piece!! - My jaw muscles ache just try'in to help the artist out!!! :) For any man who played - even peewee ball - watching those games touches a sweet memory on a deep level. Also I have noticed that the background noise of the crowd has a soothing effect - similar to the sound of the ocean. Ladies - this is a place where your man can escape and mello away from the cares of life - not unlike a day on the lake fishing. Guys It just really really helps - if you have completed one or two items on "the honey do list" before sitting down to veg - preferable with one of your offspring - teaching them to appreciate the game too!!! :) Then the time spent will not seem so detrimental to all scheduled affairs. |

| Posted 2 months ago My husband is a soccer fanatic. We had so many sports channels at one time it was rediculous. He'd watch soccer or soccer news at least once a day, it drove me nuts. Some men are just as interested in the sports on TV as we are in our dramas or comedies on TV. We are into the stories, humor, drama, etc. They have to get some action TV - real action - not acting. | Posted 2 months ago I explained once why I liked watching football to a bunch of guys that I was working on a project with at school, they were thunderstruck and found it entertaining this is what I said. 'I like watching football because there is nothing more satisfying then watching a bunch of grown men running around with a ball in hand wearing spandex slapping each other on the ass, hugging, kissing, patting, whacking and tackling each other, reaching between each others legs and then all running in to the shower to strip infront of each other shower togetherand have towel fights and say how 'macho, cool and manly', they are. ' Two of my gay guy friends agreed that it was the reason THEY watched football too...one guy (straight) said that is not what REALLY happened in the shower room and I told him if he ruined my dream then I would tell him what REALLY happens at a 'pajama party' and its not girls pillow fighing in their underwear and 'experimenting'! He agreed that he has never TECHNICALLY been in a shower room and I told him I have never been in a pillow fight, he kept his dream andI kept mine! "The brick walls are not there to keep us out.
