Who pays for abortions?
● About 75% of women pay for abortions with their own money; 13% of abortions are covered by Medicaid, and 12% are billed directly to private insurance. Some women who pay for the procedure themselves may receive partial insurance reimbursement after the producer is completed.
How much does a surgical abortion cost?
● In 2001, the average charge for a surgical abortion at 10 weeks’ gestation was $468; but since most abortions in the United States are performed at low-cost clinics, women on average paid $372 for the procedure.
How much does a medical abortion cost?
● In 2001, the average charge for a medical abortion was $487.

Does the U.S. government help poor women who need abortions pay for them?
● Congress has barred the use of federal Medicaid funds to pay for abortions, except when the woman’s life would be endangered by a full-term pregnancy, or in cases of rape or incest.
● As of 2006, 17 states used their own funds to subsidize abortion for women who cannot afford it. In actuality, many of these states currently provide little to no funding which covers these services.
How many states prohibit public funding of abortions?
● A total of 32 states and the District of Columbia prohibit public funding of abortions, excepting cases of life endangerment, rape or incest.
How do poor women afford contraceptives?
● More than one in three US women are eligible for publicly funded contraceptive services and supplies because their income is below the federal poverty level. An estimated 1.3 million unplanned pregnancies and 600,000 abortions are prevented yearly because of publicly funded family planning services.
Emergency Contraception: Is the “morning-after pill” the same as the “abortion pill?”
● Nope. The ‘morning after pill’, or emergency contraception, can prevent pregnancy when taken within 73 hours after unprotected intercourse. It cannot, however, effect or negate an established pregnancy.
